Dr Mahul Amin is an internationally recognized researcher, leading urologic pathologist and highly effective operations executive, with consistent success heading up clinical practice and research transformations in translational pathology, leading growth, and increasing industry recognition for large laboratories.  In his most recent position as Medical Director, Chairman and Professor of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, he transformed the community-based practice into internationally recognized academic department. Previously, as Director of Surgical Pathology at Emory University Hospital, he led the strategic and operational reorganization of the entire Surgical Pathology services with focus on quality, turnaround time and service accountability, and planned and oversaw reconstruction of the facilities.

Dr. Amin earned his medical degree at G.S. Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital in Bombay, India. He is a national and international consultant in tumors of the genitourinary tract, including prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, and testis.  Dr. Amin is a world-renowned expert and educator in genitourinary pathology having co-authored the 2002 World Health Organization (WHO) classification systems for urothelial tumors and renal neoplasms (authored 7 chapters); he is currently a panelist developing the 2015 WHO classification systems for tumors of the prostate, bladder, kidney, penis and testis (authored 18 chapters). He has made many significant and pioneering contributions including the first major descriptions of entities in genitourinary pathology including lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the bladder, micropapillary carcinoma of the bladder, acquired cystic disease associated renal cell carcinoma, clear cell-papillary renal cell carcinoma, thyroid-like carcinoma of the kidney, tubulocystic carcinoma of the kidney and low-grade glandular tumors of the urachus. From 2001 to 2009, as Vice Chair and then as Chair of the Cancer Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Dr. Amin has led the cause for standardized pathologic reporting of all cancer in the United States and the committees' work resulted in one of the important standards of the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer center accreditation program in the United States and the CAP's laboratory accreditation program. In 2013, he was appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging manual where he will coordinate the activities of over 410 contributors (surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, cancer registrars, clinical epidemiologists and members from the cancer surveillance, computational biology and bioinformatics community) from 181 institutions, 22 countries, 5 continents to outline the next edition of cancer staging (staging manual to be published in 2016). The AJCC staging system is widely used in clinical decision-making of all patients with cancer, to define clinical and translational research and healthcare policy in cancer.

Dr. Amin’s scientific interests are in the discovery and validation of biomarkers in urologic malignancies for clinical personalized medicine. Dr. Amin has also co-authored 9 books, including two Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) fascicles, two major texts in urologic pathology and a monograph on Gleason grading of prostate cancer. He has authored over 315 publications and 62 book chapters. Dr. Amin has given over 340 pathology grand rounds, lectures and workshops in 45 cities outside of the US in 25 countries.  He has been a member of the national faculty for courses for the American Urology Association (AUA since 1990), United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists (USCAP) (since 1995), American Society for Clinical Pathologists (since 1994) and CAP since 2003.

Since 2000, Dr. Amin has participated in federally funded research (NIH, DOD) as principal investigator, collaborator or consultant. He serves on the Executive Committee of the AJCC (2003-2011; 2013-2016), and was a member of the Genitourinary Cancer Staging Task Force, 7th Edition of AJCC staging, and lead coordinator of the prostate cancer staging system.  Dr. Amin was the North American Representative to the International Society of Urologic Pathologists (ISUP) from 2012-2015 and serves on the finance committee of the USCAP. He has a been a Director of Urologic Pathology fellowships since 1997 and his trainees practice, teach and/or conduct research in departments all over the world. Dr. Amin is the Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Anatomic Pathology since the year 2000. 

Dr. Amin was awarded the prestigious annual prize of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists in 2001. Since 2002, he has been continuously selected in the "The Best Doctors in America" listing. Dr. Amin is also the recipient of highly prestigious awards through the College of American Pathologists including the 2010 CAP Foundation Lansky Award and the 2010 CAP Distinguished Service Award.  In April 2014, under the strong leadership of Dr. Amin, the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai was selected as "Lab of the Year 2014" by Medical Laboratory Observer (MLO), a national networking magazine whose primary audience is laboratory directors, medical technologist leaders and hospital administrators.

In 2016, Dr Amin is undertaking a one year sabbatical studying various advances in Biomedical Sciences as they pertain to urologic malignancies and diagnostic medicine with an aim to bring new technologies and methodologies into clinical practice.
